About half an hour from the center of Venice is Torcello, the place where it all began. In the 7th century the area, which already housed a suburban settlement of the Roman city of Altino, registered a new impetus. On this island we can visit the oldest building in the lagoon, the church of Santa Maria Assunta, which contains some of the oldest and most extraordinary Veneto-Byzantine mosaics to be seen. It is also worth climbing to the top of the bell tower to enjoy an unparalleled view of velme and barene, the semi-emersed lands and sandbars at the water’s edge from the shallow waters, which build real natural lacework.

A few minutes from Torcello, the island of Burano, a fishing village whose characteristic feature lies precisely in the colors used for the plastering of the houses, stands out clearly and vividly. If Venice is based on muted shades of yellow and pink, here the colors are particularly bright, and during the walk exploring the island we will explain the reasons for this custom. Burano, however, is also famous for its lace, crafted with mastery by the hands of a few lacemakers who hand down an ancient and unique tradition. Yes, because the “stitch in the air” technique is exclusive to this place!
We will take you to visit one of the stores to have the lacemakers explain directly to us this complex art, which is unfortunately disappearing. Burano is also the perfect place for a coffee break and to enjoy another typical product of the island: buranelli cookies. In fact, as soon as you wander through the island’s callettas, you are hit by the scent of rum and vanilla wafting from the many bakeries.

In contrast, the island of Murano bases its fame on the art of glassmaking. The island’s fortunes began in the late 13th century, when the government ordered that all glassworks be moved here to avoid devastating fires in Venice. We will visit a furnace where master glassmakers and their apprentices will amaze us, giving us a demonstration of the two techniques: blown glass and sculpture.
