From Titian to the Jewish Ghetto: art, history, engineering, and skeletons in the closet
Cannaregio, marshy terrain fraying into the waters of the Northern Lagoon; breathtaking views of the Dolomites when the air is clear. Yet building in these areas has always been a challenge. Even for the best architects, such as Jacopo Sansovino. During this walk we will discover masterpieces of architecture and painting that will surprise us: masters like Titian, to feel closer to his mountains, but also his pupil and rival Tintoretto, not by chance chose to live here, enriching the artistic heritage of these areas. After so many splendid churches we will come to an area without bell towers, and perhaps for this reason even more evocative: the very old Jewish Ghetto. By observing details that would escape an inattentive eye we will understand the real origin of these places, and its evolution. The itinerary is particularly suitable for lovers (adults or children) of watercolor, drawing or photography.
Proposed itinerary
Cannaregio is, along with Castello, the city’s most populous sestiere. It is distinguished from the rest of Venice by its long fondamenta, open and bright, where residents still stroll to meet friends and sip aperitifs along the rii. Often, however, not even those who live there know the beauty of these areas: from Titian to Sansovino, from Tintoretto to Giambattista Tiepolo, all the greats of Venetian history have left tangible signs of their passage.
We will begin our route with the majestic Jesuit church, whose splendor already speaks volumes about the Serenissima’s tumultuous relationship with the religious order. Through the fondamenta Santa Caterina we will arrive at the famous Ponte Chiodo and the Scuola Grande (immense actually!) della Misericordia. And here, the stories to be told are many and exciting, especially for lovers of engineering and architecture.
We will continue through Campo dell’Abazia to the sites of Tintoretto, his temple, the church of Madonna dell’Orto, where the artist today rests next to his son Domenico and beloved daughter Marietta. We will continue to the church of S. Alvise to admire masterpieces by the father Tiepolo, and then end the journey in Campo del Ghetto Ebraico, the oldest Ghetto in the world. How, when, and most importantly why was it created? Come, we will find out together! The tour’s ending area is ideal for continuing the day or evening among the famous bàcari and restaurants!
