This tour is a cultural itinerary of the small churches of Venice. These are “minor” sacred places compared to better-known churches such as the Frari or St. Mark’s itself, but they are true treasure troves of art, an example of Venice’s cultural vibrancy. Many of these buildings were built, restored and still decorated with private funding. The works preserved inside them belong to famous painters who can be admired in museums around the world(Titian, Bellini, Tiepolo…). Most of the works we will see are still located in their original place, commissioned by noble Venetian families, but also by bourgeoisie and foreigners, that is, foreigners who lived in the city for work purposes.
Proposed itinerary
The tour offers an alternative visit to the classic routes and leads to more intimate places less traveled by tourists. Even those who have already been to Venice often limit themselves to the usual tours, taking the most crowded routes. With this tour you will discover and appreciate “minor” Venice. The route is mainly within two sestieri (as the neighborhoods are called) that of Cannaregio and Castello. With respect to the meeting place, our itinerary will take us to visit the following: San Giovanni Crisostomo, Santi Apostoli, the Jesuits, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Santa Maria Formosa, San Zulian, San Lio, La Fava.
Customizable
Admission to some churches is upon payment of 3 euros, payable on the spot. There are two churches on our itinerary for which a fee is charged: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria Formosa, which are usually not open on Sundays.
Residents of the City of Venice have free access to all churches but must show ID. Since these are active churches, they may be closed at very short notice even during normal public opening hours.
