ITINERARY OF OCTAVIA PEDROCCO

Ottavia Pedrocco

Venice, walking with the Vedutists

With this tour I will take you around Venice with some exceptional companions: the Vedutists, painters who in the 1700s immortalized the city. We will follow them to the places where they lurked in order to portray a Venice that at that time – contrary to what has been handed down by a certain 19th-century-oriented historiography – was industrious and rich and, in some respects, enjoyed a privileged position compared to other cities in Europe, thanks in part to the government’s neutrality policies, which were able to generate a long period of peace. With the help of a tablet, we will stroll through well-known and lesser-known places, discovering how they have changed over time both in terms of urban planning and customs; not only the buildings, but also the figures and boats that populate the views will give us a chance to discover the city then and the city now, and will also take us to get acquainted with these painters, with their almost photographic, yet sometimes surprisingly whimsical precision.

Proposed itinerary

Meeting point will be in front of the Accademia galleries, then we will cross the bridge and reach St. Mark’s Square, finally ending our tour at Rialto. Ours will not be a linear walk, but almost a zigzagging between one point and ‘another, to overlook the Grand Canal here and there.

We will use the images left to us by the Vedutists as a time machine, giving us a chance to reimagine buildings, boats, crafts and ways of life now lost.

Those who wish can try their hand at taking photographs from the same vantage points used by painters for their views, and it will be a good opportunity to talk about the camera ottica and how it was used in the 18th century.

Customizable

This itinerary can be enjoyed by small groups of adults, no more than eight people to fully enjoy the tour, but it also has a version designed especially for families, so please feel free to contact me so that we can make arrangements based on your needs and those of the little ones at home.
