The sestiere of Dorsoduro

Venice, this magical and very picturesque place, is a miracle of perfect balance between water and land that has lasted for centuries. Its most beautiful and majestic canal, the Grand Canal, flows sinuously through the middle of the city and cuts it in two, dividing the three Sestieri to the north from those facing the southern lagoon.

An itinerary in that of Dorsoduro is therefore proposed as an interesting route to reveal the characteristics of one of the oldest and most popular areas of Venice. From Zattere to Salute, the history of this particular part of the lagoon city can be touched and discovered step by step along a pleasant panoramic walk. The protagonists here are not only the aristocratic palaces and the many churches, but also the more humble callette, votive capitals, sotoporteghi, wells and, of course, bridges. A journey into the real and truly unexpected Venice awaits you!

Proposed itinerary

Welcome to the discovery of this typical but also unique Venetian Sestiere. Giving us a rendezvous at the San Basilio vaporetto stop, the walk will begin with a visit to the Church of San Sebastiano: here Paolo Veronese worked for a long time, leaving a fascinating pictorial cycle, which we will be able to appreciate more thanks to a recent and careful restoration. In the 15th century Dorsoduro was populated with artisan activities that became very important for the Republic and in fact we will discover the last two squeri left in the area. The first stop will be the Squero Tramontin, which saw the asymmetrical shape of the gondola hull as we know it today come out of skilled hands and excellent ingenuity. A few steps away we will also find the Squero di San Trovaso in the typical construction reminiscent of a mountain hut (wooden houses in Venice are rare nowadays). Returning to the Zattere we will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view, perhaps in the company of an excellent gianduiotto, a real must for those who come to these parts! Where for centuries the long logs that came down from the Dolomites stood waiting for processing, we will now notice the stratifications of Venetian architecture over the centuries. Heading towards Campo Sant’Agnese we will slip into the hidden and less traveled calli of Dorsoduro, skimming past the Gallerie dell’Accademia, the Guggenheim Foundation and Ca’ Dario. Passing through the Sotoportego dell’Abbazia we will be dazzled by the blinding white of the Basilica della Salute with whose visit our tour will end.
